Search Engine Training
~MSN/Live Search~

Now that you have Google Search under your belt, you may not want to go much further, as all the Search Engines (SE) have their sites laid out very well. To the degree, that should you barely have the expertise to reach their Search page you will not have any problems to use what is before you.

MicroSoft Network (http://www.msn.com/) has a full page with a search box at the top, to type in your search parameters. This will suffice for your ‘Ordinary Garden Variety’ searches. Now to set up your ‘General Settings’ or go to an “Avalanched’ search, to the right of the ‘search box’ you will see a ‘Live Search’ link to their stand-alone SE. (http://www.live.com/)

Now that you are there, the options are laid out for you. We will take you thru a couple to ‘Get Your Feet Wet’.
The ‘Cowboy’ background has camouflaged links in it, should you have time to play with them. Above the search box, there are options to be more selective in your search and ‘Web’ is the default search.

Top Left of the page you can click back to MSN’s other sites and on the Top Right, ‘LogIn’, ’Advance search’ (here you can change the ‘General Settings’, for a single search.) ‘CashBack’, (Should you be an ‘On Line Shopper’, check this out.) ‘Options’, (We will look at this below.) and ‘Locality’ for lack of a better word, where The United States’ is the default, with other places to choose to search should you have the need to be more specific.

Now under ‘Options’, you may change your ‘General Settings’, (Called ‘Preferences’ in Google.) and the basic choices, except in ‘Live Search’ you are limited to displaying only 50 pages.

Every Page has the ‘Help’ link at the bottom and we will look at one of the FAQs for this lesson. We Clicked on ‘How can I customize my search?’ and as you can see these directions, will meet your needs. i.e.
1. Go to http://search.live.com.
2. On the right side of the search box, click Options, and then click Advanced Search.
3. In the Advanced search box, under Find search results that include the following, type the keywords for what you want to find, and then select one of the following options:
Continue to choose your options and then
4. Click Add to search.
5. When you’ve finished adding options, click the search button.

Blogs and Their Gadgetry!

October 9th, 2008

OK!  You have been idle long enough.   Let’s get going again.
Keep in mind that the browsers display your Blog differently. So after you have it like you want it on the working browser, open it up using other browsers to see what it looks like.  You may have to make changes to get a happy medium, as each browser has a mind of its own.

Also, check on your Blog regularly, even if you do not post!  When I went back to http://1st-time-blog-lesson.blogspot.com/  the Google Bots had it flagged as spam!  Well there is a first for everything! Besides it does count as traffic, even if it is you.

Let me again preface this lesson with:
(Remember To Read All The Way Through Before Starting This Project!)
It may seem like extra work, though you will have a better feel for what you are to accomplish.

To day is ‘Gadget Day’ and we naturally start with logging in to our blog. Now we click on:
http://1st-time-blog-lesson.blogspot.com/  and then on Customize to get to your dashboard.

Here is wher you click on ‘Add A Gadget’ and the ‘Add A Gadget’ Menu opens up and were are going to add (Some Plain) ‘TEXT’ to our blog, so scroll down and click on ‘TEXT’.

In the Title Area we typed in : This Is A TEST (Of TEXT Gadget.)
And clicked in the body and typed same thing.  The Body has a WYSIWYG (Say: Wis ze wig) (WhatYouSeeIsWhatYouGet) editor and we use it to get this as a final project.

This Is A TEST (Of TEXT Gadget.)

This
Is A TEST

(Of TEXT Gadget.)

Notice I used the Icons in order to get this.  Click on “SAVE” at the bottom and the editor closes and you are back to you Blog. Should you want to change this text widget or even remove it, click on the ‘Edit’ Icon (Tools) to the right bottom and make yourself happy!  Noticed I put a link back to here on the word ‘TEST’ and (Of TEXT Gadget.) is indented, as it is now a quote.  Do not be concerned about what you type in, as to get started is the point. Play with it, as it will give you practice on the WYSIWYG and become familiar with how the other gadgets will work.

Take your time and try the other gadgets, as it will become natural after a while. Should you have any problems, post a comment here and we will be happy to help you get it going.

Now when you have tired of what gadgets are available, open up the ‘Add A Gadget’ Menu again and type ‘Date and Time’ into the ‘Search Box’.   There are over 70 clocks to choose from and we scroll down to ‘Simple Time’ click on it, change the format, (If you must) and then on ‘SAVE’ and you now have a Current Date and Time Gadget in your side bar.
Don’t forget to drag your ‘About’ back up to where you want it!

Now ‘VIEW’ your Blog!

There are many Gadgets out there and if Blogger does not have what you are looking for, do a Google Search for one.   See you next time!

Have Fun and be blessed, DP
